Cuba Boosts Pineapple Crops
Monday, October 16, 2017

Havana.- Eastern Ciego de Avila province stands out as Cuba's major pineapple producer and is working to consolidate that position to meet the growing demand from the domestic and international markets.

In that regard, local authorities are fostering the use of irrigation system and better dosing fertilizers and biological means against plagues and diseases.

The province has vast pineapple crops of the Red Spanish and MD-2 varieties, being the latter introduced from Costa Rica in 2012.

According to experts, the MD-2 variety is sweeter, juicer and bigger, so it is highly demanded in markets like Spain, Italy and France.

Local farmers plan to harvest 2,000 hectares of MD-2 pineapple, while they continue to crop the Red Spanish variety, which is more resistant to climate change and demands fewer inputs.
