Cuban Agricultural Sector Kicks Off Tobacco Harvest
Monday, October 16, 2017

Havana.- Cuba's agricultural sector kicked off the 2017-2018 tobacco harvest, during which some 32,000 tons of tobacco leaves might be collected.

The entrepreneurial group Tabacuba reported that some 29,000 hectares of tobacco will be planted, compared to 28,570 hectares planted in the 2016-2017 harvest.

The tobacco will be used to make cigars and cigarettes for export and the domestic market.

Of the total plan, 2,824 hectares will be cultivated with covered tobacco for wraps and 12,432 hectares will produce fine leaves.

Agricultural authorities have planned a better use of irrigation systems, including dropping and low-pressure sprinklers, as well as the production of plants in tunnels.
