Genetics in Favor of Health in Cuba |
|
|
lunes, 2 de octubre de 2017
Havana.- The genetic control programs implemented in Cuba's healthcare system contribute to reducing the risks of congenital anomalies and improve children's quality of life.
In eastern Las Tunas province, those programs allow detecting cardiovascular malformation and Down syndrome in an early stage of pregnancy.
Generally, congenital defects are detected by ultrasound screenings, which allow physicians to verify the general state of the fetus, estimate the birth date, and detect multiple pregnancy, defects or complications.
Pregnant women also undergo alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) tests, and those over 36 years of age are also tested to detect Down syndrome.
In addition, a program allows doctors to diagnose sickle cell anemia, which affects the red cells and causes several complications.
