Exotic Species at the Botanic Gardens of Holguin |
|
|
Monday, September 18, 2017
Havana.- The Botanic Gardens of Holguin, in eastern Cuba, holds several species of exotic plants in its collections.
That is the case of the so-called sausage or cucumber tree (Kigelia africana), which can grow up to 12 meters.
The tree's bark is used as an antidote against snake bites and to relieve headaches and stomach aches in some African regions.
The tree is native to Senegal and bears curious fruits in the shape of a sausage that can grow up to 50 centimeters.
The project to preserve exotic species also includes the blue flamboyant, which is native to Central America, and Monstera deliciosa, from the tropical jungles of Mexico and Argentina.
