Cuba Recovers Production of Natural Fibers
Monday, August 14, 2017

Havana.- Production of natural fibers, especially henequen, is among the priorities by economic authorities in the western Cuban province of Matanzas.

Cuba's yield per hectare ranges from 0.6 to 0.8 tons and the goal is to reach 1.2 tons with a high survival of crops.

In that regard, experts pointed out that there must be some 3,300 plans per hectare, in addition to guaranteeing their exploitation for a minimum of 15 years.

The best soil to grow henequen is that of porous rocky coral with little earth, although in Cuba, henequen is cultivated on limy soil.

Although henequen is a crop with limited possibilities for mechanization, the demand for natural fibers has led to implementing a strategy to recover that plant.
