Havana.- The city of Cienfuegos, the capital of the central Cuban province of the same name, attracts domestic and foreign tourists due to its cultural and historic values.
The city's historic heart was designated a Cultural Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2005, due to its strong French influence.
Cienfuegos, which is also known as the Pearl of the South, was founded as Villa Fernandina de Jagua on April 22, 1819 by French settlers led by Don Luis de Clouet.
Its architecture contains elements of neoclassic decoration, with promenades, parks and broad and straight streets that attract vacationers from Europe mainly.
Among the city's main attractions are the Jose Marti Park, which has a marble rosette in blue, green and brown, and the Tomas Terry Theater, which was built in 1889 and which is strongly influenced by Italian architecture due to the use of marble as decoration.
