Experts Assess Promoting Fig Cultivation in Cuba
Monday, May 15, 2017

Havana.- Experts working in Cuba's agricultural sector are assessing the options to promote the cultivation of fig in the eastern part of the country.

According to experts from the Jorge Dimitrov Agricultural Research Institute, a project to harvest fig in collaboration with Spain started in 2001.

The initiative focused on the study of the fruit and the way to produce it under the conditions in Cuba, where excellent results have been reported in mountainous areas.

In that regard, it has been proved that fig trees can grow in tropical climates, as studies have confirmed in the municipalities of Bayamo, Yara, Jiguaní and Manzanillo.

Figs, as fruit, are similar to apples and contain vitamins A and C, iron and phosphorus. In addition, it can be used to make wine, pastas, marmalade and juice.
