International Sports Award for Cuban Athlete

Havana.- Cuban runner Omara Durand, tri-Paralympic champion in Rio de Janeiro-2016, was awarded the Juan Antonio Samaranch Prize for Disabled Athletes.

The recognition was given by the president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, Antonio Becali, and his deputy Roberto León Richard.

Durand competes in the T12 category for deep visual weaknesses and was also nominated for the Laureus Awards.

The runner conquered the titles in 100, 200 and 400 meters in the event in Rio, with world records included in the hectometer, 11.40 seconds, and the return to the oval (51.77).

In addition, he holds five gold medals in the World Paralympic Committee's World Jiu-Jits held in Christchurch-2011, New Zealand, and in Doha-2015, Qatar.
