Medical Genetics Benefits Cuban Population

Havana.- Medical genetics services reach the population of Holguin, in eastern Cuba, with a view to achieving early diagnosis of various diseases.

Studies reveal that chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome is one of the most frequent among those over 35 years old pregnant women.

The average age of females served in the institution varies between 38 and 40 years, who decide conception in that period by socioeconomic considerations or religious beliefs.

Heart disease, kidney disorders and gastrointestinal malformations are added to the pathologies diagnosed with high frequency in that group.

The center has a genetic network present in 14 municipalities and takes on the training of professionals in medicine, nursing and stomatology, plus about eight specialties in the health sector.
