Cuba Fosters Practice of kidney transplants

Havana.- The Cuban health system accumulates since 1970 to date 5,703 kidney transplants, as part of efforts to improve the quality of life of the population.

According to experts, of the total number of interventions, 458 correspond to those made from a living donor and other organs from deceased were employed.

Currently transplants are made in Havana, Camaguey, Holguin, Santiago de Cuba and Villa Clara, the latter with the best survival rate in the country in terms of grafted patients a year.

In that territory, for the past 15 years they have benefited 409 patients, including patient’s post-treatment with immunosuppressant.

Cuba has a program Chronic Renal Sick Care offering coverage to all patients who need this service, which is focused on prevention.
