Monday, April 25, 2016

Havana.- Cuba reached an Olympic quota through Yoandry Iriarte in the form of saber, after the continental qualifying tournament held in Costa Rica.

The Cuban representative reached the silver medal among 14 contestants, despite the few previous options as he occupied position 137 in the world ranking.

Iriarte gave in at the top of the podium against Mexican Julian Ayala on a date at which he attended accompanied by Yamirka Rodriguez and Ringo Quintero (sword), Darling Robert (saber) and Elizabeth Hidalgo and Ruben Jay (foil).

Quintero and Rodriguez were close to win the seats but remained in bronze and silver, respectively.

Ivan Trebejo was the last individual Cuban medalist in the Olympics (silver in Atlanta 1996) and the men's team was third sword in Sydney-2000.
