Spanish Art in Central Cuba
Monday, September 28, 2015

Havana.- The city of Santa Clara, the capital of the central Cuban province of Villa Clara, is hosting an exhibition of oil-on-canvas paintings by Spanish artists at the Museum of Decorative Arts.

The museum, housed in a building constructed in the Spanish-colonial period, holds 60 paintings by a score of Spanish artists.

The artworks were made from the second half of the 17th century to the first half of the 20th century, and among them are four anonymous baroque paintings attributed to followers of Velázquez and Murillo.

The exhibition also shows artworks by academicist painters from the late 19th century and early 20th century, including Eduardo Cano, Enrique Serra, Sebastián Gessa and José Jiménez Aranda.

The collection also consists of portraits of popular or anecdotic characters, local customs, religious figures, landscapes, still nature, allegories and nudity.
