Cuban Official Joins International Sports Federation's Leadership
Monday, August 24, 2015

Havana.- Cuban official Alberto Juantorena, two-time Olympic champion in Montreal 1976, was elected for one of the vice presidencies of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Juantorena, who is also the president of the Cuban Athletics Federation, was the fourth most voted candidate for that post among seven registered candidates.

In the general vote counting, he was only preceded by Sergei Bubka (187 votes), Qatar's Dahlan Al Ahmad (159) and Cameroon's Hamad Kalkaba Malboum (115).

Juantorena was the only Latin American official who was promoted at the IAAF congress, as Ramiro Varela, from Colombia, was not chosen for the Council.

Regarding the results of the voting, Juantorena noted that it is an acknowledgement to the development of that sport in Cuba, which has won several Olympic and world titles.
