Infant Mortality Rate Decreases in Camagüey
Monday, June 29, 2015

Havana.- The eastern Cuban province of Camagüey has reported an infant mortality rate of 1.9 deaths per every 1,000 live births since January to date.

Local healthcare officials pointed out that it is the lowest rate in the country, in a period when nearly 3,400 births were reported.

Complications at birth and in the condition of the babes associated to pregnancy in adolescence are the main causes of death, considering that 20 percent of pregnant women are under 18 years of age.

Therefore, the Mother-Child Program demands more actions to prevent pregnancy in adolescence, not only by the healthcare care sector, but also by the community.

High blood pressure, anemia and other complications that cause premature childbirths and underweight newborns are some of the risks of conception at extreme ages, particularly in adolescence.
