Cuba Applies Pediatric Ventilation at Home
Monday, June 29, 2015

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system is applying pediatric ventilation at home to patients over one year of age who suffer progressive muscular dystrophy.

That procedure, in force since 2006, has contributed to prolonging the survival and improving the quality of life of children, in addition to benefit the patients' relatives.

In order to apply this method, some conditions must exist at home, including locations, guarantee of disposable materials and medications, and training the family.

In addition, there must exist coordination between the medical team from the hospital and the Primary Healthcare System, and being sponsored by the Mother-Child Program (PAMI) in the municipality and the province.

At present, 26 Cuban children are receiving mechanical ventilation, including ten children who are at home and 16 who are waiting for all the conditions to exist at their homes or facilities appropriately equipped for that purpose.
