Cuba Promotes Voluntary Blood Donations
Monday, June 29, 2015

Havana.- Cuba stands out in the American continent because all blood donations in the country are made voluntarily.

According to the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), 12 countries in the continent have that condition, although only 43 percent of the blood comes from non-paid voluntary donors.

Every year, Cuba reports an average of 400,000 blood donations that allow meeting the needs from hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry.

In addition, the National Blood Program consists of 46 blood banks, including 15 provincial and 31 municipal blood banks, and 168 extraction centers.

Cuba has complied for 31 months in a row with the blood donation plan in all provinces, and young people have joined more than 100 donors' detachments.
