Private Sector Gains Ground in Cuban Economy

Havana.- Non-states forms of work in the Cuban economy employ at present 504,616 people, a clear sign that shows a growth in that activity.

According to authorities, 154,756 are women, while 155,605 are youths, accounting for 31 percent of the total.

In addition, 83,538 (17 percent) are people who moonlight as state workers, and 62,043 are retirees (12 percent).

The provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Camagüey, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba are the ones with more self-employed workers, sharing 66 percent of the total.

By economic activities, the most represented jobs are elaboration and sale of food, cargo and passenger transportation, house rental and telecommunications agents.
