Emblematic Buildings in Eastern Cuba Restored
Monday, June 29, 2015

Havana.- Emblematic buildings of high cultural and historic value in eastern Santiago de Cuba are being restored as part of actions to celebrate the city's 500th anniversary.

The program includes the rehabilitation of the Holy Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral Church, in downtown Santiago, whose remodeling is at 73 percent of the program.

Works on the building started two years and three months ago, and so far, the atrium, two belfries, the parochial house and the façades on San Basilio, San Pedro, Santo Tomás and Heredia streets have been restored.

The restoration process highlights the new hull on the largest dome, which was covered with copper and sealed hermetically, according to the parameters necessary against earthquakes and big hurricanes.

The Cathedral Church is the first and only one in Santiago de Cuba will have a copper-covered dome, a project that was supervised by the Italian architects Ricardo Deponti and Laura Bolondi.
