Cuba's Population Is the Oldest in Latin America |
|
|
Monday, May 4, 2015
Havana.- Cuba's population is the oldest in Latin America, with more than two million people over 60 years of age.
That number accounts for 19 percent of Cuba's total population, a trend that is attributed to a low birth rate, the increase of life expectancy and social development.
The oldest province is Villa Clara, followed by Sancti Spíritus and Havana, and Plaza de la Revolución municipality, in Havana, with nearly 25 percent of its population over 60 years of age.
Due to that situation, Cuban authorities are focusing their work on strengthening primary health care to meet the demand for experts in geriatrics and gerontology.
In addition, they are enlarging and improving the network of Elderly Homes and Clubs throughout the country, for which 66 million pesos were allocated last year.
