Historic Value of Cuban Comparsa Highlighted
Monday, May 4, 2015

Havana.- The Cuban comparsa (dance group) Los Marqueses de Atarés, which is considered an emblematic expression of Cuban identity, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

The group, founded in the Havana municipality of Cerro, represents humble neighborhoods of the Cuban capital like Carraguao and is a historic proof of the so-called curro negroes.

The tribute to the dance group is part of the 426th anniversary of the Settlement of Cerro, where dance events, workshops and cultural contests will be held as part of the festivities.

Havana residents will be able to enjoy streets shows and popular art fairs by local artists.

The celebrations will also involved least favored zones, shantytowns, health institutions, schools and recreational centers, and a main event is scheduled for June.
