Central Cuba's Natural and Environmental Values Highlighted
Monday, April 27, 2015

Havana.- The central Cuban province of Cienfuegos holds the Pico San Juan Ecological Reserve in the Guamuhaya Mountain Range, which has great natural and environmental values.

According to experts, the reserve holds Julio César's Cave, which is Cuba's highest karst grotto, with a maximum altitude of 1,053 meters above sea level.

The reserve is managed by the Botanic Gardens of Cienfuegos and benefits from management strategies with participation of nearby communities to protect the environment.

In addition, it is an excellent place to watch animal and plant species such as cuajaní, jagüey, orchids and curujey, as well as hutias, bats, green woodpeckers, Cuban trogons and Cuban nightingales.

Located in eastern Cienfuegos province, with a maximum altitude of 1,140 meters above sea level, the Guamuhaya Mountain Range has several mogotes (round-top hills) that are over 1,000 meters high.
