Values of Slave's Route Museum Highlighted
Monday, March 30, 2015

Havana.- The Slave's Route Museum, in the western Cuban province of Matanzas, is a true exponent of the struggle against inequality.

The museum, the only one of its kind in the country, is part of the project sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to visualize the exploitation of Africans in the Americas and the Caribbean.

Museum experts noted the existence of 800 documents, instruments of punishment and religious attributed in the institution.

The objective of this kind of initiative is to raise people's awareness about the suffering of millions of men and women who were submitted to servitude for centuries.

The exploitation of black people was intensive in the 19th century in sugarcane plantations in the province, where more than 55 percent of the country's sugar was produced in 1857.
