Cuban Art in Defense of the Fauna
Monday, March 2, 2015

Havana.- Artists from the eastern Cuban province of Holguín launched the handcrafted collection "El Arbol de la Vida" (The Tree of Life), aimed at promoting the protection of the environment in the country.

Artists José Antonio and Jairo Salomón are the authors of the project, which shows that objective of preservation through the representation of birds and insects from Cuba's endemic fauna.

According to experts, the project consists of 14 artworks made of materials such as burned bones, cattle horns, ivory and metals like silver and gold.

As a peculiar element, some sculptures of insects like the queen bee, the cricket and the cicada were made 100 times larger than their original size so that the public can appreciate them better.

In addition, each work includes a clock that measures the animal's vital time and some are not working because the species is extinct.
