Cuba to Increase Production of Drug against Chronic Hepatitis C
Monday, October 27, 2014

Havana.- Cuba's pharmaceutical industry will increase production of the drug known as PEG-Heberon, which is administered to patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C.

The said drug, which was developed at the Havana-based Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center, is expected to meet the total demand from the country's healthcare system.

PEG-Heberon is the commercial name of Interferon Alfa-2b, a drug that has similar properties to other products of its kind that are commercialized in the world to treat chronic hepatitis C mainly.

In December 2009, the drug was registered by the Center for the State Control of Medications, Equipment and Medical Devices.

In order to treat chronic hepatitis C, the subcutaneous injection of a vial of PEG-Heberon every week is combined with the daily oral administration of the antiviral drug Ribavirina.
