Havana.- The central Cuban province of Cienfuegos benefits from the services of the Genetic Center, which is attached to the mother-child program in the region.
The institution is in charge of diagnosing, treating and preventing genetic diseases and congenital defects, with a positive impact on the reduction of the infant mortality rate.
The center tests pregnant women with high risks and makes prenatal diagnoses, as well as expands the coverage of ultrasound screenings in the first and third trimester of pregnancy.
Experts noted that in the first semester of 2014, the center diagnosed 14 congenital malformations during pregnancy.
It is worth mentioning that since January, the province has reported an infant mortality under five deaths per every 1,000 live births.
