Cuban Forestry Sector Boosts Forest Recuperation
Monday, August 25, 2014

Havana.- Cuba's forestry authorities are working on the preservation and enlargement of forest areas to make a sustainable use of raw materials.

In that regard, the Ministry of Agriculture activated a program until 2020 to increase timber production by 25 percent.

The goal is to produce up to 190,000 cubic meters of timber, so all 27 forestry companies and sawmills, which employ nearly 30,000 workers, are working to meet that objective.

Cuba exploits nearly 32 species of timber trees, including cedar, teak, mahogany and oak, among others.

The most demanded timber byproduct is charcoal, of which 40,000 tons are produced every year to meet the domestic demand and for export.
