Impact of Breastfeeding in Cuban Health Highlighted
Monday, August 18, 2014

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system is promoting the creation of human milk banks to spread the use of that food for newborns.

The first steps in that direction were taken in Cuba in the 1970s, when some gyneco-obstetric hospitals started to collect mother's milk and refrigerate it to be administered to children later.

In 2005, Brazilian experts transferred their knowledge to their Cuban peers in conjunction with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the equipment was installed to open two human milk banks.

At present, experts are working on the reconstruction and improvement of the only human milk bank in the children's hospital known as Hijas de Galicia, in Havana.

Human milk banks are specialized centers that collect, process and control the quality of transition milk and mature human milk.
