Cuban Industry Boosts Henequen Production
Monday, August 18, 2014

Havana.- Cuba's economy is boosting the recuperation of the henequen industry to reduce imports of ropes and cords made of that raw material.

In that regard, the Ministry of Agriculture is carrying out a program in Artemisa, Matanzas, Holguín and Cienfuegos to plant 410 hectares a year of henequen.

The strategy also includes importing and installing new industrial machinery, as the ones in operation at present have deteriorated and waste nearly 50 percent of the henequen leaves.

As part of the new investment, Cuba bought a modern piece of equipment in Brazil, at a cost of 100,000 dollars, to double and maximize production of henequen fiber in Cienfuegos.

The new equipment extracts the fiber, which is dried and used to make ropes, cords, sacks, baskets, dusters and brushes.
