Environmental Option from Cuban Publishing House |

Monday, August 18, 2014
Havana.- The publishing house Cuadernos Papiro, based in the Eastern Cuban province of Holguín, is promoting the use of vegetal fibers in the process to make paper to print books.
Executives from that cultural institution pointed out that plantain leaves, corn stems, rose petals and dried flowers from different plants are used as raw materials to make paper.
Workers make paper manually, and to print the books they use machines from the 19th Century, a one-of-a-kind initiative in Cuba so far.
The collections published by Cuadernos Papiro, also known as art books, include recipes of Cuban traditional dishes, selections of poetry and fiction by Nicolás Guillén and Alejo Carpentier, and letters from prominent figures in Cuban history.
Cuadernos Papiro was founded in Holguín in 2001 as a small publishing house to print texts on manufactured paper, illustrated manually by local artists.
