Cuba's Contributions to Medical Research Highlighted
Monday, July 21, 2014

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system has collaborated closely with international institutions over the past two decades to develop research works on poliomyelitis.

According to experts, Cuba has proved that it is possible to eradicate the disease by implementing a vaccination program that covers 100 percent of the population.

Therefore, Cuban health authorities periodically carry out such a program and no cases of poliomyelitis have been reported in the country for several decades.

Furthermore, Cuban institutions perform clinical trials to create a cheap inactivated vaccine that could be used in developing countries.

Experts showed that only one dose of the vaccine can sensitize the immune system of more than 90 percent of the population immunized with that product.
