Eastern Cuba Exports Charcoal
Monday, July 21, 2014

Havana.- The eastern Cuban province of Las Tunas has produced nearly 3,800 tons of charcoal for export from January to date.

That volume accounts for a 22-percent increase in production compared to the same period last year.

It is worth mentioning that a large part of that output has already been sent to clients in Canada and Europe, where Cuban charcoal is highly demanded, due to its good combustibility and excellent quality.

A major charcoal producer is the Las Tunas-based Empresa Forestal Integral (EFI), as most charcoal is made from sicklebush, an exotic invasive plant whose characteristics provide a high-quality product.

This year, Las Tunas is expected to export 6,600 tons of charcoal that will contribute to increasing hard-currency revenues to boost reforestation.
