Cuban Strategy against Diabetes in Children
Monday, April 21, 2014

Havana.- The Cuban health care system is successfully implementing a program for diabetic patients with special follow up of pregnant women, children and adolescents.

According to reports, about 1,000 children under age 15 suffer from diabetes and they improve their quality of life by participating in educational camps.

According to specialists, the abovementioned initiative shows positive results since the number of hospitalizations due to disease imbalances has diminished and the patient´s family has also improved their quality of life after learning how to live with a diabetic child.

The residential camps consist of a week in which children who suffer from diabetes, as well as their parents, are taught to deal with the disease while tests are performed on the patients to update their metabolic condition.

There are 19 Diabetic Care and Educational Centers in Cuba which are aimed at teaching patients about treatment plans, food and other related issues.
