Havana.- The Cuban health care system is supported by primary health care programs which ensure a better quality of life and increase prevention levels.
In the case of the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, the abovementioned service facilitates the follow up of pregnant women suffering from diabetes mellitus and of those having preconception risks.
In this sense, a reduction in the number of maternal deaths due to diabetes and congenital malformations was achieved.
In the territory, a multidisciplinary team of specialists controls diabetes in small children, which is mainly due to autoimmune causes because the organism creates defenses against the cells which produce insulin and destroys them.
The residential camps, where educational and psychological support is given to children suffering from diabetes and their family, take place in the weeks of school recess.
