Cuban Chess Players to Participate in Int'l Competitions

Havana.- Cuba's best chess players will participate in major international competitions, as part of their training for the World Cup.

Grand Masters (GM) Leinier Domínguez and Lázaro Bruzón will compete in the Open Tournament in Baku, where 70 players are expected to participate.

Domínguez, who has an ELO score of 2,719 points, ranks third in the qualification, while Bruzón (2,673 points) places tenth in a ranking led by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2,765), followed by Spanish player Francisco Vallejo (2,724).

The tournament will consist of nine rounds, with 90-minute-long games, plus 30 seconds after the first move, according to reports on specialized websites.

Experts said 18 players have an ELO score of more than 2,600 points and set the average of the top ten players at 2,703 points.
