New Vaccination Campaign against Polio in Cuba
Monday, April 26, 2010

Havana.- Cuba's health system will implement the second stage of the nationwide vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis.

According to experts, the second dose of the oral vaccine will be administered to 362,525 children under three years of age, who received the first dose in March.

In addition, nine-year-old children will receive a reactivation of the vaccine.

Since the vaccination program was kicked off 49 years ago in Cuba, more than 78 million doses of the antipolio vaccine have been administered, benefiting all Cuban citizens under 62 years of age.

Poliomyelitis is a contagious disease that affects the nervous system. Its most severe sequels are paralysis and permanent muscular atrophy.
