Cuban Disabled People Excel in Sports
Monday, November 3, 2008

Havana.- Cuban visually-impaired people practice sport, as part of actions in favor of their rehabilitation and incorporation into society.

Some 2,000 visually-impaired people practice several sports in Cuba, a movement that began in the 1970s.

Experts noted their participation in international tournaments, where they have won medals at world and Paralympic events.

Nearly 50 percent of them practice track and field, while the rest compete in swimming, judo and chess. Efforts are being made to train them in wrestling and indoors soccer.

A group of 38 visually-impaired athletes were awarded the Glory of Cuban Sport medal as an acknowledgement of their outstanding performances at several international events.

The most outstanding athletes in 2008 were Luis Manuel Galano (athletics) and Rafael Isao Cruz (judo), gold medalists at the Beijing Paralympic Games.
