Lower Infant Mortality in Las Tunas |
|
|
Monday, June 09, 2008
Havana.- The eastern Cuban province of Las Tunas has reported the lowest infant mortality rate in history during the first five months of 2008.
According to official statistics, 1.8 deaths per every 1,000 live births were reported during the said period.
Officials from the Mother-Child Department noted that only four children under one year of age died in the province from January to May 2008.
Among the factors that contributed to reducing infant mortality in the province is improved medical care for pregnant women and newborns, both at family doctor's offices and polyclinics.
Other factors were the excellent work of doctors and medical staff at the children's hospitals in Las Tunas and Puerto Padre, and at the neonatology wards in the province's hospitals.
Las Tunas has also reported a decrease in the number of deaths among preschool children (2 per every 10,000 people), and maternal deaths remain at zero.
