Good Performance by Cuban Judokas at World Cup
Monday, May 12, 2008

Havana.- The Cuban delegation that competed in the 2nd World Judo Cup, held in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, finished fourth in that major event.

The hosts finished first among 19 counties, winning eight gold, ten silver and 16 bronze medals. They were followed by Italy (2-0-2), France (2-0-2) and Cuba (1-2-1).

The other countries were Portugal (1-1-0), Ecuador (0-1-3), Argentina (0-0-1), Germany (0-0-1), Costa Rica (0-0-1) and Puerto Rico (0-0-1).

Cuba's results were achieved by only six competitors (three men and three women), as the island's best judokas were competing in the Pan-American Championship.

The gold medal went to Anaisis Hernández, who defeated Brazil's Andrea Cavalleri in the 63-kg division. The silver medalists were Zayli Risquet (48 kg) and Heydis Abreu (+78 kg).

Among the men, Antonio Betancourt (60 kg) won the bronze medal, while Joel Muñoz (100 kg) finished fifth after losing the bronze-medal fight.
