Program for Autistic Children in Cuba
Monday, February 25, 2008

Havana.- Cuba's health system is implementing special programs to provide integral medical assistance to autistic children.

A special school was inaugurated in the Cuban capital and a similar center opened in Santiago de Cuba, where all 127 autistic children in the island nation receive specialized attention.

School officials pointed out that the students are taken care of by teachers, pedagogical assistants and speech therapists, among other experts.

The schools' staff also includes professors of music, computer sciences and physical education, art instructors and psychotherapists.

The schools are equipped with libraries and handicrafts workshops, where the children create articles for birthdays, fans and drawings.

Autism, which affects four out of 1,000 children in the world, is a disorder in development that impairs the individual's communication and social and affective relations.
