Cuban Writer Wins Int'l Poetry Award
Monday, October 15, 2007

Havana.- Cuban writer Luis Pérez-Boitel won the 2007 Marius Sampere international poetry contest with his book "Las Naves que la Ausencia Nombra".

According to experts, the Cuban author's book was among 18 finalists of 356 collections of poems from 27 countries submitted to the contests.

The Marius Sampere Award, founded in 2001 to honor that Catalonian poet, is granted every two years in Barcelona. Works from a score of Latin American, Caribbean, European and Asian countries competed for the award.

This year, Pérez-Boitel has won the Alcorta National Award, granted by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in Pinar del Río, the Paco Mir Award on Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), and the second prize at a poetry contest sponsored by Argentina's Revista Axolotl.

He also won the 2002 Casa de las Américas Award, the Desiderio Macías Silva prize in Mexico, and the Casa Teatro award in the Dominican Republic.
