Cuban Scientists Study Therapeutic Properties of Tobacco
Monday, February 6, 2006

Havana.- Cuban researchers are carrying out several studies to determine the possible therapeutic properties of tobacco, one of the plant species most cultivated in the Caribbean Island.

In that regard, experts from the Institute for Research on Tobacco noted the high quality of the proteins obtained from green tobacco leaves.

They said that the nutritional value of tobacco proteins is similar to that of other natural sources certified by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

The experts mentioned a protein known as rubisco, which can be used as a food additive.

They pointed out that due to the absence of salts, this protein could be administered to patients suffering from chronic kidney failure, thus reducing the frequency of hemodialysis.

The Institute for Research on Tobacco is also carrying out lab research on the possible non-conventional use of tobacco, thus excluding its original use.
