New Transportation Equipment in Cuba
Monday, January 16, 2006

Havana.- Cuba's transportation system has benefited from the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment, as part of a program aimed at recovering that important sector.

Experts noted the arrival of 12 Chinese-made locomotives especially designed and made according to the characteristics of the Caribbean Island's railroad system.

The locomotives, each of which has a power of 2,500 horsepower, will allow improving railroad transportation, which is used to carry large volumes of cargo.

Since Cuban authorities embarked in the recuperation of cargo transportation by railroad in early 2005, 60 locomotives and 1,800 cars have been repaired.

Cargo transportation by railroad has increased 13 percent in general and 60 percent in the case of food.

In addition, the first buses of a shipment of 1,000 arrived in Cuba to improve the transportation of passengers between provinces.
