Cocoa Fields to Be Expanded in Eastern Cuba
Monday, July 25, 2005

Havana.- Cocoa fields will be expanded in Guantánamo, Cuba's easternmost province, in order to increase chocolate exports.

New areas will be planted in El Salvador municipality with the goal of harvesting 5,500 quintals of cocoa in a medium term.

In order to achieve that goal, experts said, 700 hectares must be planted with cocoa, thus consolidating the province's position as the major cocoa producer in the country.

The specialists recalled that Baracoa reported a record cocoa output of more than 31,000 quintals during the previous harvest.

In that regard, they noted that farmers are pruning and harvesting on time, carrying out manual pollination, and taking measures to preserve the soil.

According to research, cocoa contains minerals and substances that stimulate the nervous system and are natural antioxidants that reduce the risks to suffer cardiovascular diseases.
