Pharmaceutical Museum for in Cuba

The western Cuban province of Matanzas offers tourists a proposal marked by diversity, which ranges from traditional sun and beach options to cultural and historic values.

Regarding the latter, Dr. Triolet's French Pharmacy stands out as the only one of its kind in the world and currently the Pharmaceutical Museum.

The institution, which was declared Cuba's Heritage Site, exhibits the instruments used at the time to obtain medicines, as well as several hand-decorated porcelain jars.

The area dedicated to the preparation of drugs even holds recipe books with more than one million original formulas, together with the bronze medal won by experts at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900.

Likewise, the recipes of all the formulas that were elaborated in Dr. Ernesto Triolet's French Pharmacy for over 82 years are saved, which makes then unique and irreplaceable.

During the years that it functioned as a pharmacy, more than 150 formulas were prepared, including syrups, tinctures, ointments, essences, elixirs, ointments and pills, among others.

Each order has the information of the doctor who made the prescription, the composition of the formula, the general use, the price, the consecutive number of the prescription and, in some cases, for whom the medication was.

The Recipe Registration Books are part of a documentary collection consisting of 61 volumes, 55 of which belonged to Dr. Ernesto Triolet's French Pharmacy, two from Our Lady of Regla Pharmacy, and four from the San Rafael Pharmacy, in the city of Cardenas.

The so-called copy books have been very useful to study natural and traditional medicine, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.

On the ground floor, the pharmacy has its majestic chest of drawers and the counter, the chemist back room with the dispensary table, the equipment to prepare pills or vaginal ovules and the huge record book.

Additionally, the province has the Museum of Arts, which holds a large collection of paintings, engravings, sculptures, decorative pieces and furniture, among other exponents of unique quality.

Special attention draws among visitors the rooms dedicated to paintings and engravings of Matanzas, from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as universal artworks from France, England and the Netherlands.

Among the buildings where the historic wealth of the territory is preserved is El Morrillo, located in one of the forts built in the 18th century to protect the city from the attacks of corsairs and pirates.

In the aforementioned museum, pieces of aboriginal archeology are exhibited because they are located in the largest settlement center of our first inhabitants, together with personal objects of Antonio Guiteras and the Venezuela martyr Carlos Aponte, outstanding figures during the first half of the 20th century.

Matanzas is in a position to reveal its secrets to thousands of vacationers who travel through its territory every year, due to its proximity Varadero Beach and the natural wealth of the region.
