Cuba: A Strategy for Domestic Tourism

The Cuban archipelago, a major tourist destination in the Caribbean, has several strengths to meet the growing demand from domestic tourists.

After the peak tourist season during which several foreign vacationers visit the island, the summer arises the interest of Cuban tourists, coinciding with school vacations.

In order to meet that increase in the domestic demand, the national and foreign hotel chains, in addition to travel agencies, have designed a wide range of tourist programs.

Beaches, recreational centers, facilities run by the company Campismo Popular (nature tourism) and several tourist establishments provide varied options for Cubans to enjoy their vacations.

Moreover, the Summer Fair was held at the Comodoro Hotel's boulevard in Havana to promote excursions, hotels and other options during the summer.

The hotel chains and travel agencies like Cubatur, Havanatur, Viajes Cubanacán, Gaviota, Ecotur and Cubamar are commercializing products that have been specially designed for Cuba tourists.

In that regard, Cuban vacationers are interested in Varadero Beach, the keys north of the provinces of Villa Clara and Ciego de Avila and other destinations like the Viñales Valley, Las Terrazas and Soroa.

The Spanish group Meliá presented its options under the slogan Live Love the Cuban Style, which consists of offers by Meliá Cuba, while Iberostar Hotels and Resorts included All-Inclusive establishments, varied gastronomy, and day and night entertainment.

For its part, Cubamar (attached to Campismo Popular) promoted its special options in Havana and all Cuban provinces at very attractive prices.

Havanatur has worked in conjunction with the hotels chains to meet the demand from clients, especially with stays on Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, where the demand increases during the summer.

Cubatur has designed programs for families interested in excursions, especially to the Viñales Valley, and stays in hotels, mainly in Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco and Cayo Largo del Sur.

In eastern Cuba, domestic tourists can take excursions to Salto de Agua el Guayabo, in the foothill of Sierra de Nipe, near Mayarí, where they can watch endemic species and swim in a very attractive natural pool.

In Santiago de Cuba, programs for nature enthusiasts and beach goers were designed, in addition to excursions to watch the local flora and fauna and identify the live nature of the Sierra Maestra mountain range.
