Cuba: In Contact with Nature

The Cuban archipelago, full of attractions for tourism due to its excellent beaches and warm waters, adds the potential for the modalities related to nature.

Cultural and historic options are complemented by those offered by the Campismo Popular (Popular Camping), which has accumulated more than three decades of activity.

The group has 15 companies (one address in each province of the country) and the company Cubamar is in charge of marketing, together with 29 sales agencies and four itinerant points for reservations, with an automated system.

Popular Camping, as it is known in Cuba to the campers, began with canvas stores and now combine this type of rest with low cost accommodations, has 92 facilities (more than 4,620 cabins and 19,749 capacities).

In addition, it has four international villas, located in the provinces of Pinar del Río (west), Cienfuegos (center) and eastern Santiago de Cuba, together with six extra-hotel units and two nautical points.

At present there is a wide range of possibilities of adventure enjoyment, horseback riding, games, walks and cultural meetings, designed for the whole country, in particular for young people.

The list of bases for this tourist option includes Dos Hermanas, Cueva de los Portales, Escaleras de Jaruco, La Laguna, Río Canímar, Villa Internacional Guajimico or Los Cangilones.

One of the strongholds of this variant is located in the Viñales Valley, positioned in the western province of Pinar del Río, with its peculiar antler formations, elevations of vertical walls and rounded summits that sometimes exceed 400 meters in height.

Extensive cave systems complete the unique appeal of this area, with its largest exponent in the Cave of St. Thomas, which has more than 45 kilometers of galleries already explored, or the nearly 750 varieties of orchids that are located in Soroa.

Towards the center and south of the island is the Zapata Ciénaga, with about 5,000 square kilometers of extension and considered the largest wetland in the Caribbean, which also hosts more than a thousand species of flora and a crocodile breeding ground already internationally renowned.

The waterfall of Caburni, with its 64 meters of height, the cave of Martin Inferno and its stalactite of more than 60 meters - among other attractions - await the tourists who arrive to the central region of the island, with the most important Mountainous system of that area in the Escambray.

To the east, the highest heights of the country in the Sierra Maestra mark the richness of the National Park of the same name, where the stories, legends and the most indigenous traditions are present alongside a nature of splendid beauty.
