Cuba: Tourism in the Caribbean

Cuba, a major tourist destination in the Caribbean region, bets on new modalities to support the strategy of diversification in the tourism industry.

Traditional sun and beach programs are combined with circuits to take advantage of the country's potential for tourism.

Precisely, those options are highly demanded by foreign vacationers, as they combine nature, nautical activities, recreation, culture, traditions and gastronomy.

For these kinds of activities, Cuba has a wide range of specialized companies, including Havanatur, Cubatur, Viajes Cubanacán, Ecotur, Cubamar, Paradiso, Gaviota Tours, San Cristóbal and Amistur.

As part of the policy to develop tourism, 36 airlines connect Cuba with 51 cities all over the world.

In addition, there are international airports in Havana, Varadero, Santa Clara, Cayo Coco, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Avila, Cayo Largo, Camagüey, Manzanillo, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.

Internal movements are guaranteed by Cubana de Aviación, Aerocaribbean and Aerogaviota, as well as the services provided by seven international marinas, including Hemingway in Havana, Dársena in Varadero, Gaviota Varadero, Gaviota Holguín and Marlin Santiago.

There are other jetties in Marlin Cienfuegos and Marlin Cayo Largo del Sur, and three cruise terminals in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos.

Regarding Cuba's hotel infrastructure, the local chains Gaviota, with 19,476 rooms, Cubanacán (15,255), Gran Caribe (12,025), Islazul (11,793), Habaguanex (586) and Campismo Popular, which specializes in nature tourism, operate in the country.

In addition, the new act on foreign investment has provided new incentives to foreign firms to invest in Cuba's tourism sector.

The new law provides elements that will favor the tourism industry, including investments in the sector or contracts on international economic associations.

The former consists of investments in joint ventures in which investors will have the rights to the surface and usufruct on already existing facilities.

In addition, the Contract on International Economic Association provides the possibility to finance the remodeling of facilities with the guarantee that the investment will be recovered.

Other options are the construction of golf courses and about 60 contracts to administer hotels in conjunction with foreign firms.
