Cayo Guillermo: Beyond the Large Island

The Cuban archipelago, which has a strategic location in the Caribbean region, has many islets that offer great diverse attractions to tourists, although many of the keys are very small.

Recreational options go beyond the large island of Cuba to take advantage of the keys' potentialities.

One of those islets is Cayo Guillermo, in the tourist destination known as Jardines del Rey (King's Gardens), which is considered the smallest key in the region with an area of barely 18 square kilometers.

However, in contrast, the key offers visitors exuberant flora, including such species as mahogany, mastic trees and savin.

One of the main attractions of Cayo Guillermo is its five kilometers of beautiful beaches, one of them called El Pilar, in honor of the boat of the same name that belonged to the world-famous U.S. novelist Ernest Hemingway.

Another major feature of the region is the existence of sand dunes that are up to 16 meters high.

In fact, the aforementioned beach is considered among the best in the Cuban archipelago, due to the high quality of its sand and its wide sand strip, in addition to its crystal-clear water.

In addition, the sea bottoms surrounding Cayo Guillermo resemble a large aquarium and are excellent for scuba diving and snorkeling in warm, crystal-clear waters.

The proximity to a 400-kilometer coral reef, considered the second largest of its kind in the world, after the one in Australia, adds a touch of class to Jardines del Rey.

Cayo Guillermo, which is connected to Cayo Coco by a causeway over the sea, has excellent hotels, artificial lakes, swimming pools and a wide range of entertainment and recreational options, in addition to providing high-quality services.

Guests can stay at the Hotel Meliá Cayo Guillermo, which is an ideal place for weddings, honeymoons, events and incentives.

Nature enthusiasts can enjoy the region's mangroves, blue sea, majestic flamingos and sea bottoms.

Other lodging facilities on the key are the Hotels Iberostar Daiquiri and Sol Cayo Guillermo, and the bungalows at Villa Cojímar.

The Cayo Guillermo Marina offers migration and customs services, life on board and other facilities for boats docking on the key.

Tourists can also visit the cities of Ciego de Avila and Morón and places of historic-cultural interest. Restaurants and other facilities guarantee an excellent stay on Cayo Guillermo.
